Experienced counselors regularly encounter people who, for whatever reason, seem resistant to the counselor’s connection attempts. In these trying situations, the counselor experiences this person as a reluctant participant in the counseling process and as a result, their sessions become havens for awkward moments, “yes/but” rebuttals, and frustrations emanating from both parties.
